It’s estimated there are 2.6 million squirrels in the UK, and they’re not shy about moving into lofts and other spaces in properties. Although they’re perfectly at home in the wild, these furry creatures will happily take up residence inside your house if they get the chance. Unfortunately, this can lead to damage to your property as well as plenty of frustration.
What Do Squirrels Eat?
Squirrels are well-known for their love of nuts and acorns, but what else do these pests eat? Well, bark, twigs and soil are all good sources of minerals and roughage, but squirrels also love dried corn and a selection of seeds. Whilst they are mainly herbivores, if seasonal conditions are difficult, they do also feed on a variety of insects including caterpillars, crickets, and larvae.
Breeding Habits of Squirrels
Squirrels are prolific breeders. They have their first litter between February and March and their second litter between June and July and their litter size is usually between 3 to 6. The nest is usually built high up in trees around 2 – 15 meters from the ground.
How To Deter Squirrels
- 1If you're looking for how to deter squirrels, the first step is simple: stop feeding them! Sounds obvious, but once they've been lured in, they can be difficult to get rid of - so it's best to nip the problem in the bud from the start.
- 2Trim any trees or shrubs that are touching your property, and make sure there is no easy way for them to access your roof or high floors of the building. Speak to organisations which can help you make the property uninviting to squirrels, contact your local council for more information.
- 3Proof any entry points into your garden, surrounding areas and the property itself. Look for gaps and make sure that they’re filled, you’d be surprised, squirrels can get into something even when they have minimal space to do so. If the gaps are high up and you need to use a ladder, always wear the correct PPE and take safety measures into consideration. If in doubt, speak to a professional.
- 4Consider investing in a decoy such as a plastic owl, snake and if possible, add some type of noisemaker into the mix.
- 5Peppermint oil is a great option. Unlike some other methods, peppermint oil is harmless to both plants and squirrels. Simply sprinkle a little of the oil on the leaves and in the soil around your plants, or mix it with petroleum jelly and rub it on the plant stalks.
